Every few years, E4 get their audiences to make some on-air stings for the channel as part of a competition. The best ones then get selected by a judging panel to go on-air. This process had always been a bit clunky with viewers sending in their submissions via tape…

 

Social first solution

My solution for modernising this year’s approach was to allow users to enter their work simply via Twitter and Youtube. We partnered with Spredfast, allowing us to monitor all entries before selecting our shortlist and judging the winners that now sit proudly on E4 every day.

 
 

Winner stays on

We also held a knock-out tournament with head-to-head battles every day on-air. Viewers could vote for the best by simply tweeting a hashtag, eventually crowning the people’s choice champion! Both the judge’s winner and the people’s choice winner were given cash prizes at an event hosted in the Channel 4 cinema.

Champion teamwork

Over 1,000 custom stings were submitted, and tens of thousands of votes were cast over the three weeks of head-to-heads. There were 3 million impressions on Twitter and over 15 million views of the TV ads, increasing E4's reputation as an innovative, creative, and downright fun place to be.
