The Undeclared War
for Channel 4

The Undeclared War was a new cyber-espionage thriller coming to Channel 4, highlighting the work that GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) does to protect the country’s infrastructure from vicious overseas cyber-attacks. This was a campaign I co-creatively directed with Lydia Raghavan.

The next front line is online

We launched the campaign with an ominous announcement from the government’s headquarters with one of the shows leading talents, Simon Pegg, highlighting the potential impact of a real-world cyber-attack.

It ran on on-air as a roadblock across Channel 4’s channels, across radio, and online as a ‘live’ social post.

Simon Pegg social hack

We hacked Simon Pegg’s social accounts using the ‘Jolly Rodger’ alias - one of the hackers featured in the show. Taking over his account we posted cryptic messages using a combination of ASCII and codes which could be deciphered if you had the know-how.

GCHQ Approved

The campaign received several Ofcom complaints, earned a 28% increase in the slot average and became the second biggest drama of the year for Channel 4.
