http://www.thegameslist.com/ is a website run by the CEO of Bloc Media. The website aims to be one of the best flash portals around linking to games from all corners of the web. I began working on TGL (TheGamesList) in my spare time at Bloc when I had no live projects mainly adding games and joining in as a member of the TGL community. The site is brilliant, allowing users to decide which games will be on the site. Users can add, rate, comment and favourite games as well as many other features.
After getting involved in TGL I was given the task of increasing traffic towards the site, building on the Social Networking sites we had already become a part of. I began tweeting from TGL’s twitter account giving links to the best games on the site and also interacted with the Facebook community. When I begun working on these areas we had around 150 twitter followers and about 20 Facebook fans. TGL now have over 1550 Twitter followers and over 230 Facebook fans.
As well as interacting with the community I came up with 2 games ideas that I thought could potentially go viral. The first was based on a character invented by the actor Simon Pegg on Twitter called Jet Bike Steve. After tweeting about the character, his followers began creating graphics and other content based on the character which Simon would then Retweet. This gave me the idea that if we could create a game very quickly we could tweet him the game link which would be hosted on our website and potentially increase site traffic. Fortunately for me, this worked. We made the game in one day, the concept was agreed quickly in the morning and the developer and designer worked in parallel to create the game as quickly as possible. I create the sounds along with the designer and we had a fully functioning game by the end of the day. I tweeted Simon and he retweeted the link… We had so much traffic that we had to double up the servers to manage the load, the game had over 6000 plays in one day and now has over 12,000. Not bad for a game made in one day! You can play the game here: http://www.thegameslist.com/game/8162/Jet_Bike_Steve_-_The_Game
Another game we made was during the UK general elections at a time when people were learning about the hung parliament. As a play on words we decided to make a (somewhat dark) game in which the player gets to hang the potential priministers. This game took us 2 days to make and got tweeted quite a bit, it didn’t have the celebrity power behind it so only managed a couple of thousand plays on the first day of really but still pretty good. It currently has over 7000 plays on TGL and can be played by following this link: http://www.thegameslist.com/game/8476/Strung_Parliament
