http://www.thegameslist.com/ is a website run by the CEO of Bloc Media. The website aims to be one of the best flash portals around linking to games from all corners of the web. I began working on TGL (TheGamesList) in my spare time at Bloc when I had no live projects mainly adding games and joining in as a member of the TGL community. Users can add, rate, comment and favourite games as well as many other features.
I was given the task of increasing traffic towards the site. I began tweeting from TGL’s twitter account giving links to the best games on the site and also interacted with the Facebook community. Over this period we grew from 150 twitter followers to over 1550.
As well as interacting with the community I came up with 2 games ideas that I thought could potentially go viral. The first was based on a character invented by the actor Simon Pegg on Twitter called Jet Bike Steve. After tweeting about the character, his followers began creating graphics and other content based on the character which Simon would then Retweet. I believed if we could create a game very quickly we could tweet him the game link which would be hosted on our website and potentially increase site traffic. Fortunately, it worked. We made the game in one day, agreeing the concept quickly in the morning and designing/ developing/ composing music in parallel to create the game as quickly as possible. I tweeted Simon and he retweeted the link… We had so much traffic that we had to double up the servers to manage the load, the game had over 6000 plays in one day and now has over 12,000. Not bad for a game made in one day! http://www.thegameslist.com/game/8162/Jet_Bike_Steve_-_The_Game
Another game we made was during the UK general elections at a time when people were learning about the hung parliament. As a play on words we decided to make a (somewhat dark) game in which the player gets to hang the different parliamentary candidates. It currently has over 7000 plays: http://www.thegameslist.com/game/8476/Strung_Parliament
